But what about all the diesel vehicles? I'm glad I can drive my
diesel 505 and pollute as much as I want, but the only reason diesel
vehicles are still mostly unrestricted is because the trucking
industry has money and clout. Don't forget about diesel construction
and farm tractors too.
I beg to differ with you on that one. I'll agree that the "smog test" for PRIVATELY owned diesel cars and pick up trucks is a joke. Any commercial diesel vehicle, pick ups, medium duty and hwy tractors have to be "smogged", we call it emissions test before registrations are renewed, and that's for ANY commercial diesel vehicle regardless of age. We are also subject to roadside random checks and if the vehicle fails the smog test, the plates come off, you get towed to a facility to have the truck repaired before you can plate it again. That's for most of NA.
We've only been regulated here in Ontario for the last eight years where the private vehicles have to be emissions tested.Since the mid 90s for commercial diesels. Now that vehicles have to be repaired, there is a big difference on our roads. The older vehicles are the well tended and cared for, very little of these cars with broken exhaust systems and running on half their cylinders anymore.
I wholeheartedly agree with the lawmakers on this one. No more of this jury rigging to keep the vehicle going, FIX IT and fix it right. As far as I'm concerned, they haven't gone far enough yet out here. E-test one year, mechanical inspection the next.

BTW The aviation, construction and farm industries are also regulated now as to what is put out in new equipment.
