Hello everyone,
Its been a while since I posted and don't want to buck the current trend to re-introduce.
So, in order of importance...
-1991 405 mi16
-black on black
-186,000 KM
-name: Rob Coelho (mine, not the car's)
-from: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The mi16 has currently gone through a full front suspension overhall, new struts,
bushings, ball joints, the works. Also got a lot of the little dings removed at the Dent
Clinic. Its looking better than it has in years. So now it decides to act up.
The car is overheating in a way that doesn't seem to fit the "normal" overheating
symptoms in the archives.
To give you some back ground, I have checked the coolant made sure it is topped up. I do
have a small leak in or around the heater core, from what I have gathered it is common,
and the coolant loss is minimal. The problem seems to be that the fans kick in too late (at
about 105 on the temp gauge) and cut out too early (at about 100 on the temp gauge).
Normal running temp is 90 and under usual circumstances the fans kick in around 91 or
92 degrees, the gauge never sees 95.
For the most part, this isn't an issue now, it is cold in Toronto and in normal driving the
engine has a hard time breaking 80. The problem is most obvious in stop and go traffic.
I'm guessing it is the temp sensor that is due for replacement, but doesn't it also send the
signal to the gauge? If the gauge is reading the high temp shouldn't the computer, and in
turn the fans? Could it be the climate control computer located in the dash by the fuse
panel, or something else entirely. I'm getting no check engine light, and no codes coming
up when the computer is tested.
Has anyone come across this problem? If anyone could help me with words of wisdom
before I begin replacing parts it would be greatly appreciated.
As a little aside, I dream of someday being burdened with the maintenance and headaches
of a Citroen SM. Yes, there is likely something wrong with me.
Thanks in advance,
Rob
