What's Good
Jawdropping Pininfarina styling. One of the best looking cars in the world. Better looking than more expensive Volvo C70 and Mercedes CLK. A truly beautiful car. Plenty of room for four passengers. Big boot. Airconditioning a more sensible option than sunroof. 2.0 litre versions go and handle like a sports car: much better than 406 saloon. 3.0 litre V6 has four-pot Brembo front brake callipers. Hold their value reasonably well. 3-year warranty from January 2000. Bodies are galvanized, so should keep their looks. Re-named Peugeot Coupe instead of 406 Coupe. 136bhp 2.2 HDi diesel version with 235lb ft (315Nm) torque and 129mph top speed from June 2001 qualifies for 18% list price BIK tax base. Has become by far the most popular Peugeot Coupe. New 160bhp 2.2 16v petrol engine from April 2002 replaced 2.0 litre. Develops an extra 23lb ft torque, gets to 60 in 9 seconds, goes on to 135mph, does 32.1mpg on the combined cycle and emits 210g/km CO2. Prices are £20,995 for the S and £23,495 for the more luxurious SE. Peugeots generally had below average warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index (index 86.25 v/s lowest 31.93). Steering and handling of 3.0 litre V6 not as sharp or as sporty as 2.0/2.2 litre 16v. Could suffer same aircon system problems as saloon and estate. Can suffer coolant loss from hoses or rad which can lead to damage from overheating. Potential fault in indicator stalks from May 2001. Many owners force and break them. Free fix available in France from December 2002; in UK from January 2003. 20th from bottom out of 137 models in 2003 Top Gear survey. 406 Coupe quietly dropped at the end of 2003. What to Watch Out For
The 2.0 litre engines are easily chipped and power can be anything from standard 135 bhp up to 155 bhp. They don't have the low back pressure tubular exhaust manifold of the 167/180 bhp GTi-6, though. Oil consumption may be quite high. 3.0 autos may suffer from warped discs due to owners holding them in gear on the brakes. Look for leaks: coolant, power steering fluid, gearbox oil, engine oil. Watch out for stress cracks in the doors under the mirror mountings. Recalls
