[Peugeot-L] 84 505 STI Unsolved Mysteries

Earlier today I wrote a post about stalling problems that I have been experiencing since re-torquing my cylinder head (XN6) and adjusting the valves. Until I retorqued the head and adjusted the valves the car ran beautifully. Afterwards the car stalled several times on a six mile drive. It would start again after a few minutes, run for a few minutes and stall again.

I checked the system for spark which I plenty of and then, though I don't have a fuel pressure gauge, I loosened the 12mm banjo fitting at the f.i. regulator and even while cranking I barely got a trickle of gas.

So I figured it was the fuel pump which I priced and stared at for a while. I figured it couldn't be the tachymetric relay as I had installed a brand new one three weeks ago.

Anyhow, after much fretting (I am a guitarist in real life), I decided to give the new relay a look and it looked as if it had burned out. I jumped connections 30 to 87 with some wire and a pair of roach clips, turned on the key and the car started right up. I let it idle for 20 minutes with no problem, though I did not road test it as it is raining and the AAA people are getting tired of seeing me.

Most disconcerting is that the car smoked a lot on startup. I gave the smoke (which subsided somewhat after a few minutes) a sniff and it did not smell anti-freezy.

Anyhow, for the moment the car is alone with its thoughts in the garage and I don't want to see it or talk to it.

I have a couple of questions:
		1. Shouldn't the tachymetric relay, even one made by Peugeot, last
more then three weeks (like maybe a month)?
		2. What could have caused the relay to burn out?
		3. What might the smoke be about? I recently installed a pressure
tested, resurfaced and re-guided head on the car. I got okay stats for liner protrusion and side-by-side protrusion stats. I am beginning to take this personally and am seriously considering dumping the fleet (two 505's and a 75 504) and getting a 525i or a car that actually runs reliably.

Any input will be graciously welcomed.
