Subject: Re: Cars from Europe yes...

one good way around the million dollar price tag was used by our local Alfa Romeo dealership. A few investors got together and figured out that they COULD import new 156s and Spiders in small numbers as "kit cars," cutting out most all the incredible hurdles. The cars had to be "modified" from original by something like 30% and the cars had to have their names/badges changed. The modifications that they did were things like suspension modifications, and other simple things.

it was STULTIFYING a few years ago to be driving down main st in Amherst, NY one day and in the corner of my eye notice the unmistakeable shapes of several alfa 156s...moments later, after the violent swerve and brush with head on accident, pulling into our old alfa and maserati dealer, i found myself surrounded by six or seven 156s and Spiders, rebadged AutoDelta. having had no warning, it was like stepping into the twilight zone. funny, i felt like i had won some sort of boy racer observational fantasy lottery, just to be able to check out these cars about a mile from my [american] home.

before the end of the first full week, mere word of mouth brought calls from as far away as the west coast...calls and immediate orders! by the time the investors' operation fell apart, they imported and retailed more than 15 new alfas!

anyway, i hope there might be some info here you can use.

Jay and all,

Auto Delta had a website. I read something on the internet about a big federal case against them regarding the legality of epa and or dot for those very Alfas. It seems that it was far from a legitimate import operation.

Recent research on some us govt sites indicated to me that any car 25 years or older CAN be imported without modification (i think).
