Like I said, Highway, you are right. City, the Pruis makes a serious
difference. Recovery of braking energy and reduced loss at idle. (The Prius
doesn't idle)
The Prius is a more roomy car, is faster (143 HP & 377 ft Lbs. vs. 108/105),
rides, and handles much better than the Echo, so it's not a fair comparison.
If you want to compare, start with the corolla, it's closest to the Prius,
but go test-drive both and then tell me which feels better....
Of course the Prius hasn't been around long enough for some reliability
numbers. I always drive my cars into the dirt once I get one, so I am
interested in how the Prius does long-term. It's reasonable to assume the
Engine will last appreciably longer, as it's tightly controlled, and
optimized for a certain RPM. (Plus it doesn't idle) But the question is;
would that offset something else, like replacing the metal-hydride pack?
The pack is small, so I doubt it's anywhere near the cost of an engine
rebuild, but who knows.
