Re: [Peugeot-L] Off Topic - buying new daily driver...

Your preaching to the converted Ben!

I've given this tons of thought - but my 505 Turbo is my BABY and I don't want it to be driven into the ground. I want to do a full performance restoration and have it just as my summer car, and as a development mule for all my performance modification ideas.

The other big reason is that the car just isn't very enviromentally friendly. Poor gas mileage is cause for concern and the cost of operation is very high. Combine this with valuing my time - I figure I want to spend my garage time doing cool stuff (making the 505 T a monster) rather than maintaining the daily driver.

So - a fuel efficient newer car won as the solution to our needs. All the cars in our budget havebeen dissappointments though - so hopefully the TDi wagon will impress. Will have to do more investigation on their reliability though - so far it looks fairly poor.

I did get a head up of a fully restored 504 Wagon though on e-bay - that would make me happiest of all! (Thanks "the505inme"!)

Thanks for your insight.

Rabin

  Rabin,

The newest car I have ever owned is my 89 Audi 200   Turbo Quattro. Its currently responsible for about   1/3 of my daily driving and all of the driving with   the family. The other 2/3s is taken care of by my 71   MGB/GT (with Datsun 280Z 5 speed). My wife drives my   old VW Golf with 302k miles on the clock now (I am the   original owner). This is to provide the background   for what I'm about to say...

It sure sounds like you have a very reliable, sweet   driving Pug. Even your wife seems to love it. If   thats the case, why even consider buying a new(er)   car? From what you say, there really aren't any cars   in your price range that compare to your Pug. Also, I   may be mistaken, but I get the impression that   whatever you buy, you will be keeping the Pug anyway.   If thats the case, why not just keep driving the Pug   and pay yourself $200-400CDN (a regular "car payment"   that most folks make their whole lives) a month for   doing it? Put that money away and let it earn   interest for you instead of interest for the car   dealer. Plus, you can pay for repairs out of this as   well. As long as your Pug requires less than   $2400-4800CDN/year (in this example, and really, what   car does?) it won't be long before there is a decent   sum of money in that pool. Then, when car fever   REALLY hits (like if you were to see a sweet 405 wagon   or something), you just buy it without it affecting   your finances at all. Plus, I've found that having   lots of money set aside for cars and stuff, while   driving a cool, unique, comfortable, reliable, CLASSIC   set of wheels is a really nice place to be. This way,   you can both free yourself from monthly car payments,   drive cool cars, and be financially secure. Just   think of it as getting paid to drive around in a car   you obviously love!

Plus, being in a position where you can basically   have any car you want is so comfortable that, if   you're like me, you become even more comfortable   driving something older anyway!

Why drive the ordinary when, with nothing more than   a little planning and discipline, you can always drive

  something Extrordinary???????????????????????

If you just have to have something newer RIGHT NOW,   I would suggest a VW Jetta TDI Wagon. Good gas   milage, sweet chassis, nice curves; one that is a   couple or three years old should easily be in the   sub-$20kCDN category.

  Just my thoughts.

  Regards,
  Ben Pender

P.S. Sam Walton always drove an old beat-up pickup.   I wonder why...:^)
