[Peugeot-L] Charging Circuit Info

From: Bob Bruce <bobbruce_at_mts.net>

Absolutely Not! If using a test bulb neither end should be grounded.

The charging circuit has 2 components:

  1. The big wire runs (indirectly) from the pos battery terminal to the big B+ lug on the alternator.
  2. The warning/indicator light circuit runs from the male bayonet connector on the alternator to the indicator bulb in the dashboard instrument cluster. Then from the other side of this bulb back to the POSITIVE terminal of the battery. Well not exactly: In the case of the 405 the current gets to the bulb from fuse 10. I don't know what fuse is the "charging fuse" on the 505 but there is one that is for sure

What is happening is that when there is more juice coming out of the battery the indicator bulb is grounded inside the alternator. When the alternator is putting out more juice than the car is using the ground is interrupted and the bulb goes out.

If you want to run a dirct test bypassing the ind circuit in the dash..Take a samll bulb with tails connect one to the bayonet connector and one to the pos terminal of the bayttery or even just the B+ lug on the alternator.

  Phil,

Before I do anything stupid (my strong suit) let me make sure that I   understand what you are saying.

  1. If I hook a test lead, with one end of the alligator clip grounded and touch the other end of the lead to the small push-on wire on the alternator with the ignition turned on the light should light up (assuming that it is not the bulb or wiring leafing to the bulb)?
  2. If, when the engine is running, I hook up a test lead to the battery + terminal and momentarily touch it to the same little wire than, if the alternator is good it should start charging? Is this what is referred to as "energizing the field?" Thanks, Ken On Mar 4, 2005, at 4:26 PM, (Phil) wrote:
