My Peugeot experience began when I was 11. My father had a client who
took on a Peugeot dealership, and we acquired a '61 404. My wild and
crazy Aunt Bitsy also got a Peugeot, a 403 wagon. That was a fun car.
Dad, always in a hurry, ran a sharp corner hard in the '61, in the
fall, with wet leaves all over the road, and me in the passenger seat.
One acquires an opinion when life flashes before your eyes, and I found
myself looking at a telephone pole looming as we slid sideways on wet
leaves towards it. Impact was at the center post between the two
doors, at about 30 mph. The pole left its impression permanently but it
did not break the glass. That left an impression on me, too.
Later, I took on my grandmother's '67 404 at college and went from
there. I have had the '67, a '63 404, a '70 404SW, a '66 404, and then
a wonderful DS21 SW. After that one, I started with 505s. We had 2
wagons, and then the incomparable '86 Turbo, a vertitable rocket ship.
That was the fastest Peugeot I ever had. Then an '87 Turbo, and then on
to the V6s, which included an 87 5 speed and an 88. Finally, I bought
the '89 for my son, who has learned what it is to have a car to care
about. The '91 was bought to repair the '92 after an engine fire in the
'92. But it was too good to part out, so we fixed them both, and my
daughter has the '91, a great mi16 , if a bit dinged up here and there.
She too, loves her car. My '92 is running well and is a pleasure in the
summer, as is the redoubtable '57 2cv, an original US import model,
complete with the Dietz headlights!
As to me, my aunt traced our family name to Alsace, which is not far
from Souchou (spelling apologies) which might partially explain my
affection for les voitures francais. I am an architect, an elected
public servant on the local level, and am happy to be near the Imported
Car Center, in Williston, without whom I could not keep up with the
cars. Anyone in this area and in Quebec near Montreal knows what an
important resource they are for repairs.
I appreciate the knowledgeable and kind folks on this list who have
helped me with more than a few issues with the cars. Best to you all !
