Hi John,
if its smoke heavily specially in white color, I tend to suspect
oil rings than head gasket. If u r suspecting head gasket then check the
cooland and engine oil. If engine oil appearing in light color (maybe white
or light tan) then you can suspect head gasket. If head gasket leaks oil
then oil marks should appear in the coolant/water in the tank.

Hi all, I have brought another 405, as a replacement for my GRTD..
its a '92 estate.. I am hoping it has a slightly higer spec than mine :)
maybe electric mirrors or seats ? air con?
anyway, on a serious note, It smokes (white) heavily according to present
owner..adn uses oil.. Am I right in thinking it is almost definately the
Head Gasket, or possibly the turbo?
I can do the coolant check when I get to the car on friday, but is there is
a chance that the headgasket is leaking oil and not coolant?
if so, are there any easy checks for that? maybe pressurised breathers?
anything else other than what I have mentioned that could cause white smoke?
