I would strongly recommend against in-situ cleaning of the carpet.
Sure, everybody does it. You won't be happy with the results. I've
tried it a number of times.
Then, I had to do my Supra. I took the whole mo-fo out. As expected,
the jute backing was wet/contaminated/utterly-fubar. DISGUSTING. No
standard "cleaning" would have sufficed. No matter which detail guru or
anybody attempted it.
I removed the seats and took the entire carpet out. Removed the rotted
away jute backing. Put it in the back driveway and created a bucket of
warm "slurry" with clothes detergent and knocked myself with a scrub
brush. Then hosed it off COMPLETELY. Let it completely dry for over a
week.
Bought new jute backing from upholstery shop along with spray adhesive.
Results: Showroom
Plan to have the car out of action for probably 2 weeks. You can also
add dynamat at this time and clean up the bottom of the floorboards.
I'll never do it any other way again. Sorry I can't give specifics on
505s. I haven't done mine - yet. Hard work. A full carpet is big and
heavy. Takes some patience as well.

Subject: [Peugeot-L] 84 505 carpet cleaning
I wrote to the group a while back for some suggestions as to how
to
clean the driver's side front carpet on my 84 sedan. The carpet is the
victim of a leaky clutch master and it smells.
Several cleaning substances were suggested and my plan is simply
to
soak the carpet (in situ) as many as three or four times using a
wet/dry vacuum after each soaking and then letting mother nature and
maybe a hair dryer dry out the carpet,
Before embarking on this venture I have a few questions which
are:
- Does the 84 505 have the same under carpet pad system
that the
504's had? I ask this because if it does I will loosen the carpet at
the driver's door to get at the pad. If it does have a separate pad
(as did the 504) it will take a long time to dry if I don't pull it out
and wash it outside of the car.
- I have removed weather-stripping on about ten 504's,
but have
never taken the plastic moulding or stripping out of a 505. The 504
had a series of Phillips screws that held the plastic to the car's
metal interior and, in earlier 504 models, supposedly kept the carpet's
sides in place. I have no idea how the plastic comes out on the 505
and would appreciate someone advising me as to how to remove it. Thanks,
Ken
