Special to Kari Monkala:
Did you get a useful answer to this question, yet?
These racks are rebuildable in several ways. the offending bushing should be
easy to replace. Somewhere a few years ago, I read an actual manual
procedure for doing it. There was one odd tool that was helpful, probably
something you could fabricate in the workshop. I send mine out when they
start to misbehave, as I have a dependable rebuilding connection in Vermont
USA (not far) that is also relatively inexpensive. Probably, I could do it,
but as I don't even think about them very often, I don't count myuself as
"dependable." I know that I can screw up the whole engine, and the car will
just stop. Screwing up the suspension, and things may start to come apart at
speed -- not pretty!
Get the new bellows on as soon as you can. The rack will suck junk in
through that worn bushing. Then you are stuck for a whole new (different)
rack. The bushing can wait a bit. It will get to the point where it leaks a
lot of fluid, before you are in danger, at least in my experience.
If someone else has more succint advise for Kari, please put it on the list,
as I (obviously) need it, too!
