Richard:
I bled the front brakes only for Mladen last fall and found they bled with just one hitch. I did find that one bleed nipple was horridly clogged with crud and it would not bleed untill I put it on the bench and drilled it out, then it was ok. I suspect the rears may be clogged in the nipple as well. I had neither the time or inclination to continue on the freebe route for him. You may now have to replace the whole rear wheel cylinders and I suspect that it is simply bunged up inside with corrosion. You could try removing the wheel cylinder, take it to the bench and rebuild it with commonly availble wheel cylinder seals. I was able to get a handfull of seals from Napa the last time I did the job on my 504 wagon. The rear brakes are the same I believe. Take the rubber bits to a brake jobber and have him match the sizes, they are universal ie 7/8" or something. Make sure you hone the wheel cylinders really well. If they are badly pitted in their bores, you may as well forget it and get new ones. Dan

Hi all, just picked up a 1985 505 TD wagon, you know the one Dan!   made it all the way to Vancouver from Kelowna in one piece,   everything ran great, all except the brakes. Basically there wasn't   any. I would pump 5 - 6 times and only then would I get anything   resembling enough power to stop the car. Luckily I didn't have to   stop in a hurry!
Tonight I was trying to bleed the brakes to see if that would solve   the problem. The fronts bled as they should, no bubbles. When I tried   the left rear I couldn't get any fluid out of the bleed valve. So I'm   now thinking the very poor braking performance is due to a blockage   in the rear brake system along with a fairly large amount of air   somewhere. This makes sense to me as it seems to fit with how the   brakes felt when actually driving. To make matters worse I also   managed to break off the right rear bleed nipple!

What do others think about how the brakes handled, does my diagnosis   seem to fit??

  cheers

  Richard
