Reply to Brad '87 Liberte,
"Do O2 sensors fail over time or abruptly?"
In my anecdotal experience, they fail any way they want! I had one that was
doing intermittent failure for a previous owner --driving him nuts! In
trying to figure out the problem, he caused more trouble in the engine room
and gave up. I bought the basket case for $150, replaced the injector supply
lines he had broken, reattached some vacuum lines that he had pulled apart
in hidden and obvous places, found a few electrical connections that needed
attention, then drove it around haltingly for a while. I finally found the
O2 sensor problem one day, when I could not get out of a gully (on a regular
road) I had driven into near the river. This was before I knew much about O2
sensors, so it took me a few disconnetings and reconnectings of electrical
connections to find (as you have)that disconnecting the O2 sensor allowed
engine management to function -- my car to go, and out of the gully I went.
I could not get the sensor out of the exhaust pipe, so it didn't get changed
until I swapped pipes a year later for another reason.
"Could you have another problem possibly?"
Do you have a Peugeot!?!

Subject: [Peugeot-L] poor idle, O2 sensor

> My '87 XN6 wagon has been idling poorly after warmup. I checked for vacuum
leaks and loose wires but found none. I tried to turn out the air screw to
raise the idle, but it was maxxed out. Lastly, I dis-connected the 02 sensor
and now it warms up, idles and runs great. Previously it was running very
rich but now, dis-connected, engine runs fine. 02 sensors don't fail in this
manner do they? I thought they degraded slowly. It's only a few years old.
Do I have another problem possibly?
