Peter:
In spite of what a lot of people will tell you, the usual source of poor starting is actually related to bad grounding. I have had similar problems to yours on my Mi16, it would sometimes take up to 10 repeated turns of the key to finally get it to start other times it would start perfectly first turn of the key, so I removed the battery, found a grounds junction under the battery tray, removed all the wires, polished them (carefull not to remove all the silver plating) and reinstalled. I proceeded to do this with all the ground junctions I could find. Make sure the main ground strap from the battery is also cleaned and tightened. I have never had a problem starting the car since in over 2 years. On other 504/505's some ground junctions I have looked at had brown crud all over, some could not be unbolted they were so corroded. Eliminate the inexpensive stuff first before you proceed to the costly. Good Luck

  Hi All,
This is my first time posting but I've been lurking for a while. I've   been involved with Citroëns for some time but have always had a soft   spot for Peugeots since I learned to shift manually on my Uncles 504.   Recently I was on the lookout for a daily-driver 505 and found an`84   505S with the 3-speed auto for a near-free price. Of course nothing's   free which brings me to my questions:

  1. The previous owner has been rapping the fuel pump with a hammer for the last few months as part of his daily start up procedure. I'd like to replace the pump and was wondering about the reliability of aftermarket replacements. I've seen prices from $117 to over $250. Any recommendations?
  2. As if to let me know who's boss the car wouldn't turn over on this, my second day of ownership. Turning the key results in nothing. The battery is good, the headlights dim and the wipers stop when I try to start it. I also hear a relay click when I have the key in the start position and move the shift lever out of P or into N. I tried jumping the terminals on the starter solenoid to no effect and was planning on using a test light to see if power was getting to the solenoid from the ignition switch when I ran out of daylight. Does this sound like a solenoid problem? Any special troubleshooting tips?

I've ordered the haynes manual so I'll be able to RTFM as soon as it   arrives. I'm a firm believer in throwing good money at basket cases   so I'm looking forward to actively participating in this list.

  Thanks,
