Peter,
- What does the fuel pump do before rapping it and after? How are the
electrical connections on it? Do you know if the primer pump in the tank
is working? You should be able to hear the difference if you disconnect
its power wire in the trunk with the engine running.
- If your lights go really dim while turning the key, and especially if
they don't come back, check your battery cable connections. If those are
ok and you jump between the two big terminals on the solenoid, and you just
get a little sparkle or nothing, you need a starter. A good starter would
whirr without cranking the engine when you jump between the big
terminals. Jumping from the cable to the small push-on terminal should
crank the engine if the starter is good.
- Don't expect too much from the Haynes. Your engine isn't in there,
although a carbureted version is, and there is a zdj engine with the K-Jet
injection (like yours). Much of the book does not apply to your car, so
mark the pages that do when you find them!
Good luck, and welcome to the List!
