Hi, Kenneth:
Thanks for that fascinating trip down memory lane. The plip on my 87 turbo
is gallicly intermittent; I've noticed it is least reliable on the drivers
side, and most reliable on the passenger side, especially the rear quarter
panel! It's also most reliable when you hold the blasted thing next to the
glass - all of which must be amusing for anyone watching: the driver is seen
approaching the car in a circling maneuver, apparently undecided - or
absent-minded about which side he is going to enter the car on. I've
concluded the real purpose of the thing, beyond providing mild amusement to
the guy or gal in the next car at the parking lot, is to reduce, even if
only slightly, the wear and tear on the key lock on the driver's door.
BTW, I've noticed some people call the TV remote the a 'clicker'. In this
8-Peugeot family, it is known as the "flipper" - as in flipping channels.
Words are funny little things, aren't they? For the philosophers out there,
nominalism is a fascinating subject; for the linguistics, semantics are
equally so.
I'm guilty of drifting a bit now, but I've always wanted to know if dogs can
reason - monkey experiments aside, my theory is that you need words to
reason, and most dogs don't have a big vocabulary - sit, fetch, food,
walkies, etc. (although I remain impressed by those that can even spell e.g.
V-E-T) A related question that has always bothered me is when dogs are
dreaming about chasing rabbits, or being chased by a giant rabbit, are they
beholding only the images, or are they also considering the few words that
they know (e.g. "Fido, come here! You bad dog!")
Well, that's enough speculation for tonight. Again, thanks for opening a
different sort of thread. The one thing that I would never say about the
list is that it is dull.
