Sounds to me like the linkage, outside of the gear box has seized or come apart
It is accessable from under the car and though the plate that is under the consol

Hi, the girlfriend was driving my '87 V6 5 speed today and got home
to tell me the gearbox in the car is not working as it should.
Basically, from what I can figure out, you can only select 3rd and
4th gears, no matter where you put the stick. The clutch still works
ok but putting the car into 1st is now 3rd. I'm thinking something
inside the gearbox has given up the ghost, possibly one of the
selector collars.
Has anyone run into this problem before??
