Run a 10 ga wire direct from the alternator B+ to the positive battery post put on a new positive and negaitve cable ends at the battery These alternators will self destruce if they cannot juice throuh to the battery they go into fuill flat out charge mode at 80 amps and ppffsst nada.

The 405s are the worst they crap out because of resistance where the B+ wire is crimped to the pos battery cable at the starter solenoid

Leave the old wires all in place just runa parallel circuit for insurance I've don't this to all my 405s and haven't lost an alternator since The alternators can be repaired with new diodes aka rectifier pack

Concur with my son Phil. Just went through the same agony on my 87 stx,   three times in 9 months. The rebuilt alternators just keep failing.   Sometimes they just put out low voltage, not enough to recharge the battery.   That will turn on the light. It is getting very difficult to find the   alternators.

  Greetings,

I have a 1992 Peugeot 505 DL wagon with the 2.2i engine.   In the past week, my "BATTERY" icon caution light has illuminated.   Yesterday, I had the car jumped twice to get it home. Finally, I had to   change batteries (one from my other 505 wagon) to get it home.

Situation: I took the ORIGINAL battery (in car) to Autozone. They checked   it, but could not determine if the fault was either alternator or a bad   battery. They suspected BOTH. Strange analysis, I thought.

Background: I jump started an old car about a week ago. It was jumped   properly, using a body ground, and the old car (an old AMC Ramberler   American) finally started. However, this is the only ususual thing I've done   with the car, electrically, since the problem occured.

After changing batteries last night - using the OLD battery. I removed the   POS and NEG connectors, and did an overnight trickle charge. However, this   morning, strangly, the same RED BATTERY caution light illuminated.

I suspect a bad alternator. Has anyone had this symptom?

FYI: The folks at Autozone said the alternator was only putting out 12.08   VDC, not 14.0, or so.

Thanks to anyone who has any ideas about what to do.

  Sincerely,
  Tim Grimes
