When you say you boosted the old car "properly" - did you boost it with your car running?
If the answer is yes - then you definitely boosted the wrong way.
The proper way to boost a car is with the car off. When the car is running the altenator sees that HUGE draw of the dead car trying to crank and it overloads the altenator to the point of blowing the diodes.
The only way to boost a car is with the boosting car off. If the car to be boosted is really dead, then run the car to charge the dead battery for 10 minutes or so, shut the car off, and then try to boost it like that.
I'm quite sure the diodes are done on your altenator - very good tip on that Ford rebuild kit - can anyone provide details on that kit and which altenator it fixes?
Great tips on altenator maintenance guys - I had no idea there was som trick things we could do to increase the longevity of the altenators!
