I agree - a "properly designed" system, or one that is at 100% *should* be able to handle such a load. Prior to being taught this in a DC power control class - I always boosted from a running car.

It just made sense to me though. I confirmed it by boosting cars with the car off and found it worked just fine, so I decided it just wasn't worth the risk to the altenator to boost any other way.

I think another factor up here is that when we usually do our boosting - it's usually -25 to -40 C and the load that a frozen car puts on the boosting car is unusually high - more so than even a winch I'd think. (I used to work on 4x4 bush trucks with 8000 lb winches - but those had dual batteries, with the winch connected to the one on an isolated circuit.)
