The 2.1 liter diesel is a variant of the XD90 which was used in 504 cars
from '74 to '76. Unlike the 2.3 and 2.5s it has wet liners, which are
replaceable, and much superior to the bored-block setup. The marine and
commercial versions of the engine, designated XDP, usually have timing
gears instead of a chain.
Cold start smoking in the automotive engines is usually due to timing chain
stretch causing late valve and injection timing. Most of the smoking in
those engines can be eliminated by advancing the pump timing by about 3mm
at the mounting flange. I don't know if the timing gears wear enough to
retard the timing--somehow it seems doubtful.
