George, Everyone,
I am saddened to hear this news. I only met Bob in
person once, and quite by chance. In fact, he is the
one who told me about this group.
In Feb 04, I was hitting auto parts stores in
Madison, AL begging for swag for the car show I was
putting on. I was waiting for the manager to finish
with a customer who was looking for a power steering
hose. Thinking I knew everything, I suggested a hose
shop to the gentleman when the manager was unable to
help. He said that he knew the shop and that they
were completely unable to handle
anything...anything...PEUGEOT...
At that moment I realized that I was in the company
of a real car guy. We ended up talking French cars
and European cars in general for nearly an hour in the
parking lot! I walked away from the meeting impressed
with his knowledge and love of French cars and feeling
great to have met such an enthusiast, being a Euro car
enthusiast myself.
Bob was out of town the day we had the show, so he
wasn't able to make it. I missed him anyway, as there
were no French cars at our EuroBrit show.
Unfortunately, our physical paths never again crossed,
but we did share several emails in the months
following our chance meeting. I tried to keep up with
him, but noticed that around the first of the year,
emails to him began bouncing back due to a full
mailbox.
I'm heartened to hear that he had some pretty good
days toward the end. I'm disappointed that I won't
have the chance to get to know him better. For the
ones who did, I offer my sympathies.
Regards,
Ben Pender
