In my experience, 10.5 to be functional. But that is really pushing it.

In my line of work, if I suspect a battery, I charge and service it with distilled water, check the voltage and check again in 24 hours of sitting. If its lower than 11.5, its a gonner. A specific gravity check would work, but we never can find one aroung the shop.

Black stuff under the caps is a sure sign of a dieing battery. Heavy sulfation (white flakes) is a bad sign, especially if large flakes are resting on the separator plates (the taller fins underwater.)
