While on this subject, I think what's more likely to create a problem on
the 505 (most car use the same setup, really) is something that was
setup to monitor the charging circuit to begin with: the light bulb for
the charge indicator. This is #18 on the following guage picture:

This light bulb is in series on the circuit to the field exciter of the
alternator. As mentionned before by many, if this bulb goes, your
alternator wont charge your battery. I try to look at the dash when I
put the key to ON:
-check that charging indicator is on
-check oil level
-check fuel
Of course after a while, you get too comfortable and dont really pay
attention to it. You just crank the car. Was the light on? Bah...
A bulb with a tungsten filament is of course not the best thing for
reliability in an environment with a lot of vibrations. I was thinking
that modern LEDs have incredible lifespan, particularly when
underdriven. Some also are bicolor/bidirectional. Might be an
interesting thing to replace that bulb with one of those.
