[Peugeot-L] try the primer/filter diaphragm

Richard:
Well done on saving the wagon.
The priming pump may not be working adequately. The symtoms you describe are typical of an airlock in the system. It is usually most evident on cold startup. When you prime the fuel using the push button on the top of the filter bowl, does the fuel come out the bleed screw in dribbles or torrents? Is there a distinct solid pressure build up after 20 or so strokes or is it the same no matter how long you pump? The usual fix for this is to remove the metal cap from the top of the filter by prying back the 4 tabs ( they usually break off). Inspect the rubber diaphragm for perforations, tears or general gummyness. Kits are available with replacement cap, diaphragm and spring, well worth the effort and around $25. Sometimes it is a poor seal around the rim of the cap due to inadequate pressure from the bend tabs. Hope this helps,
Dan

Hi, I would like to thank all the people who've helped me with keeping   my wonderful Peugeots running.

Since acquiring the '85 505 TD stationwagon I've got the brakes back   online and am now able to safely drive it around town. There are a few   more problems with the car to work through and I'm getting to them   slowly. The most pressing one right now is trying to figure out why   the car doesn't run so well upon startup.

The car starts well after a couple of tries and then settles into a   regular ilde, but after about 2 minutes warming up it basically dies.   Pushing the 'gas' pedal has no effect on revs, all I can do is wait   for about another 4-5 minutes until the engine wants to accelerate.

The car has the water heated diesel fuel filter, I'm wondering if that   might have something to do with it or maybe there's a problem with the   diesel injection pump, although this seems to work normally the rest   of the time so I've moving more towards there being some kind of   interruption in the fuel supply. I've just managed to secure a copy of   the XD2S engine manual so I'm going to check that out and see if I   can't pin down a cause for the problem.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why the car won't start better??

  cheers

  Richard
