You don't have to remove the heater to get at the hose connections.
They are under the dashboard, though, and kinda hard to get at.
Pull the padded surround off the heater controls - it just clips in,
but be careful and go slow, trying to pull evenly, so you don't
crack the old vinyl covering. You might rub some Vinylex into it
for a few days to better your odds. Then you can remove the center
consoles and get better access. You may have to remove more of the
dashboard, I don't know for sure.
Fuel filters are easy to get. Try Brian Holm on this list if you
want OEM, but you can also get them at NAPA or any of the online
auto parts places. Many brands to choose from, but I think OEM
Purflux brand is best.
Other advice:
- Get a manual ASAP. Haynes is much better than nothing.
- Do a valve adjustment. I just did my '78, and it made a huge
difference. And my cars both run really well to begin with!
- Clean the air filter (it's reusable) with some diesel fuel and
then re-oil it with a little clean motor oil (don't saturate it,
wring it out before you put it back on).
- You're already changing all the fluids, but may I stress brake
and clutch fluid?
- Clean all the electrical connections, esp. the batt cables.
- Have fun with it. It could last longer than you if you take
good care of it.
Good luck, and good for you for getting the car running again. When
you hear the old diesel hammering you'll be grinning from ear to ear.
