David is probably right about the
pinging/detonation.
One thing I would note is that if the engine is only
spinning at 2k rpm, you shouldn't really have your
foot in it! If you are going to accelerate
enthusiastically, you should do it with the engine at
a higher rpm! Even if you are doing it from a stop,
the clutch slippage and low first gear should allow
the engine to run well over 2k rpm very quickly. If
you're just cruising down the road at, say, 1800rpm,
and decide to punch it, you really should downshift as
well. Lugging the engine, especially a turbo, is very
bad. If you can, you should always try to cruise with
the revs over 1800-2000rpm, and never call for full or
even moderate power at those low rpms.
Why was the engine rebuilt at 45k?
