Hello all,
I just bought my first Peugeot (1968 404 Wagon) and you all have been so helpful, so I
have a question. I want take the XM-7 that I have now out of my wagon and put in a
diesel engine. I mostly want to do this because for the last two years I've been converting
French fry grease into biodiesel. I run it in my Ford F-250 camper truck. Anyway I have
two local choices. There is a guy in Eugene Oregon, 3 hours away, who has a 75 504
sedan with an XD-2 in it. He says I have to buy the entire car for $400. I also know a guy
with an XD-88 here in Portland that's been sitting in garage for a while. He wants $500
for the engine. Now my question is which is the better engine, and which has the simpler
install? I understad that I'll have to clean/convert the gas tank, run fuel return lines, ect
Onect...but does anyone have a suggestion as to which motor will bolt into a 404 with less
hassle. Also both motors need to be rebuilt, so which is going to be easier to find parts
for? I found a web site for a company in England that still machines XD-2 parts, but many
people on the web seem to believe the XD-88 is a better motor all around. The tranny in
my 404 is 3 speed automatic that was transplanted from a 504 (at the same time as the
XM-7).
What do you suggest? XD-2, or XD-88, or am I crazy and should I just fix up and keep my
XM-7 and pay at the pump? Should I buy the 504 and pop my XM-7 in it, have lots of
parts left over for the 404 diesel conversion as well as a running 504 gas sedan? I have a
friend with a shop who specializes in Mercedes Diesel, so I've got facilities to do just about
anything. I also get a huge bonus in May which will leave me enough cash to do most
anything within reason.
Has anyone out there done this before? From what I've read on the web Pug Diesels are
freakin awsome motors. What I really want is a rock solid classy as hell 404 wagon that I
can drive every day.
Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx
Mark Ruskamp
