Re: [Peugeot-L] 505 Wagon differential

First, to be sure it is the differential, drain the fluid into a clean container, and check the deposits on the magnetic drain plug. If the diff has failed there should be chunks of metal in the fluid and on the magnet. If the fluid is clear and there is only smooth fuzz, not gritty between your fingers, it is probably not the diff itself which has failed.

It could be the splines on the pinion where they mate with the rear of the driveshaft, or the u-joint, or the transmission, or conceivably even the clutch.

The diff can be replaced separately from the whole rear end.

Wagon and sedan ring and pinion assemblies have different part numbers for the same ratio, so they do not directly interchange, but I think the conversion can be done by juggling some spacers, according to some of our Down under colleagues.

Your ratio 9x35 or 3.89:1 is only used in 5-speed xn6 wagons, but is used in several sedans. The 4:11 ratio is more common in wagons, and would work just fine in your wagon IMO. That is what the automatic xn6 wagon uses, with a direct drive top gear, where you have approximately a 20% overdrive in fifth.
