Check the message headers. They're coming from a machine in India. My guess is someone is simply using the target's e-mail address to send a message.

As far as free anti-malware options go, I like a combo of Spybot, MS Anti-Spyware, and Avast. Avast is nice because it does not place some of the limitations on the end user that AVG does.
