Than you for the info. I'll sent this to everybody if I can remember
the stuff.
Here it is. There is no 1980 505 TD, only a 505 D, but there is a 81
505 TD.
The BA 7 transmission from the 79 has the same ratio as all their 4 sp.
It is 1:1, and the rear end is 10/37 (3.7:1) on the 505 D. I'm almost
sure it's the same as the 504 4 sp. If it's not (which I doubt) it
would be so close!!
Now with the BA 10/5 on the 81 505 TD things are really different. It
is 1.1854 in 5th, and the rear end is 12/43 (3.58:1), a tad longer.
In short the TD is one torquer and it pulls really long. The rear end
is barely longer, but beefed up with many more teeth. In 4th gear it's
no big deal; but in 5th gear it a very different story.
Another thing. Do not use the weaker BA 7/5 with the TD. No dice. Be
also aware that the shifting mechanism in the BA 7 and BA 10 families
are different and will require modifications to the shifter.
I wish I had a better answer for you - Leon Capart
