Hi Phil,
I took the whole unit out and opened the box (yes, it is the Kiekert type), however, everything seems to be fine. I clened all the contacts (They're slightly different than the ones on your pictures - it's a connector more like the tail-lamp type). Unfortunately - no results. I will attempt to tackle it this weekend, and look at all the locks.

That's because your unit also has(had) bad solder connections. Simply
re-seating the connector may fix it for an indefinite time. It could
re-fail at any moment.
Because this connector is under the dash, it is not a likely victim for
corrosion like the underhood connectors are. This is why I am pretty
positive about my diagnosis.
