[Peugeot-L] '85 505 fan control

Hi all, trying to get the fan/heater going in my '85 TD. Had to take the whole central panel off and all the controls apart to get to the hot/cold switch that had become disconnected. Managed to get it back together and working. Now I need to figure out how to get the fan speed control working. Some previous owner has hard wired it so it's either on or off, but can't be controlled from inside the car. On the passenger side of the engine bay near the shock tower there is a grey plug with four or five wires going into it. The numbers on the wires are 27C, 27E, 27J, M1 and also a thinner red wire. Located near this plug mounted to the fender is a big transistor. Looking at the wiring diagram in the 505 manual I can kind of see that all this wiring is interconnected but I can't see the grey plug. Has the transistor stopped working and the previous owner bypassed the speed control somehow? does anyone have any suggestions??

cheers

Richard
