Subject: Re: [Peugeot-L] 505 daily driver? Why not?
Indeed. This is well-charted territory.
For myself, a car is transportation. I feel I might as well enjoy it. I
commute 110 miles daily.
I can not lease a car with that kind of yearly mileage. I can buy a car,
and, in three years, it is worth nothing and is out of warranty unless I'm
driving something flukey like a Hyundai.
I own my cars. It costs me $1100/year to insure the three Peugeots and the
Citroën for liability. If some imbecile smacks the door in a parking lot,
sure, I'm going to be PO'ed, but I'll get over it and won't worry about the loss
in resale value. Driving in Boston traffic in my 405 with the crappy paint
job, I'm not afraid to be aggressive, because other drivers know I don't care.
They back off.
"What will the neighbors think?" Screw 'em. I don't worry about things like
that. And making an impression on other people is such a subjective thing.
Just when you might think people think you're so cool in your expensive car, you
find out everyone really thinks you're a pinhead or someone concerned with
conspicuous consumption. Or the converse, when I moved into my present
neighborhood, I stopped at the Sunoco up the street and asked. I was told Peugeot
was the only car they don't service. Last month I was buying gas there, and
the kid pumping said, "Boy, that's a cool car!"
Sure, there are drawbacks, such as maintenance, but I'll tell you one thing
for sure: all of the new car dealerships have service departments, and it's
not just for oil changes. All cars break. Last time I checked, after my '91
Turbo wagon got a new engine and all of the necessary parts to meet my
satisfaction last Spring, I've driven 30,000 miles and only changed the alternator
once and the oil a few times.
Cost per mile? Low. Satisfaction per mile? high. I can find many, many
places where my dollar does me a lot more good than in a high car payment, believe
me. And if you think you're impressing the chicks with whatever you're
tooling around in, forget it, unless you're in a Ferrari or something meaningful
like that.
My Peugeots are daily drivers, and so would my old Volvos be if I liked
Volvos. I'll keep my transportation costs low, my other money in good places, and
thumb my nose at people who aren't practical.
Just my $0.02.
