I changed the oil and filter on my wagon on Friday, before setting out on a near-1000 miles trip. Halfway there, a group of indicator lights blinked on (brake, STOP, water temp hot, oil level red/white arc). Eventually the blinks came more often and stayed on longer. I made a pit stop and found that it had used two quarts of oil in about 300 miles. And I found a loose hose that I'd never noticed before. It was supposed to be attached to a nipple on the top of the valve cover, just to the right of the timing belt. The hose looks as though there was once a clamp on it, but no longer.
For some reason, I feel hesitant to get a hose clamp and make the hose stay in place. I don't remember going anywhere near that hose during the Friday oil change, checking other fluids, etc. I never noticed that hose before. So I'm wondering why it would suddenly keep popping off.
Should I clamp it down, or should I take this as an indication of something bad happening?
