Good question
I have only seen this as a problem on the 405s
on the 505 the B+ alt wire is in a separate terminal that is on to the same solenoid stud
as the pos bat cable but not crimped in with another wire which seems to allow the
corrosion to start

there is a joint at the starter solenoid where
the B+ wire from the alt is crimped to the pos battery cable
this joint fails
the more humid and salty the conditions the sooer this will happen
It may never happen in the desert but when the connection developes some resistance
it will cause the alt to charge flat out and self destruct
all the rectifiers will burn out
I have found it necessary to run a 10 ga wire direct from alt B+ terminal
directly to the pos post of the battery
Leave the existing wiring in place
This will save you the trouble of replacing your new alternator a few days after
you replace the old one
And correct another serious design flaw of the 405...
I am assuming that the diesel is wired the same as the gas 405s sold in Canada and the USA

Subject: [Peugeot-L] Alternator fix question 405 TD
Hi all, I have a broken alternator, no charge to battery, light on, and
tried other batteries so 100% its Alt. I have a spare one, but the
armature doesn't turn, it looks like the pulley is too close to body.
I am wondering if I can pull any bits from this and put in faulty one?
I.e. brushes..? (I remeber someone posting about this last week so will
have a look thru archives)
all the best
John
