It's been a long time, but as I remember, it is just the grease plasticising
and causing the high beam switch mechanism not to latch. I don't remember
having too much trouble with the springs, but I can't seem to remember
exactly what the trick was, although I think I used some stiff wire to hold
them in while re-assembling, then pulling the wire out. Next time I come
across one, I'll take pictures. =)

When you take them apart, what do you find is the problem? I assumed that
something breaks on the high beam latching mechanism.
How do you keep the springs from flying when you take them apart?

to flash) when the lights are off. The pre-86 stalks would get "sticky"
when the lube dried up and be hard to get to "click". I have never found
one I couldn't take apart and repair.
