There is a design flaw also in the alternator if this is the case. (not
surprising at all) The alternator shouldn't run "flat out" if unloaded.
The regulator should "see" the output of the B+ terminal at over 14V and
keep the exciter off. If this was the case and there was anything over
about 40 volts at the B+ terminal, the same voltage would be present at the
little tab via the 3 freewheeling diodes, and this would flow back through
the alternator light and blow the bulb.
Recently I came upon a scenario where someone was doing just this thing to
older AC Delco alternators. (similar internal circuit) Someone was driving
4 of these alternators with a small gasoline engine and using them to power
a large 48v DC PM motor to spin up a flywheel. (yes, strange!) Once the
flywheel was up to a certain RPM a centrifugal switch stolen from an AC
motor would open and leave all 4 alternators open-circuit. They had mounted
the alternators to a wooden frame to electrically isolate the grounds and
had them wired in series. The Gas engine was a 6hp unit originally from a
3500 Watt Honda AC generator and had a mechanical governor to keep it
running at a constant 3600 RPM., and the pulley on the crank side was about
the same size as most car engine main pulleys, so I would imagine the
alternators were spinning at least 8000 RPM. When the motor first was
switched on it almost killed the engine, and probably would have if the belt
wasn't slipping so much.
I didn't have an ammeter handy, but if it really is loading that 6hp engine
all the way, that would be almost 4500 watts. If they are 1000 watt
alternators (typical) that puts them close to rated output producing almost
80 amps each.
The guy running this strange thing has been doing so for about a year on and
off now. He has the same 4 alternators.
