[Peugeot-L] 505 BUSHINGS AND STRUTS

I recently replaced all of the front end bushings on my '85 505s Wagon and I heartily recommend doing so. The bushings aren't terribly expensive, except for the upright links at each end of the front stabilizer bar, which are about $25 each. There's a decent amount of work involved but all you really need is a heavy duty vice and some appropriately sized sockets to press the new ones in. This same recommendation also applies to the 504 and 604. The car is quiter and takes the bumps better. It is also easier to steer (maybe due to a more normal camber following the bushing replacement). I also noticed that the pronounced camber of the wheels that I've noticed on my car and other older 505s also seems to have gone away with the bushing replacement.

Also worth considering is to rebuild the struts if they are rebuildable. For that you will need a spring compressor.

If you do those two things you'll get about as close to making a new car out of an old one as you can get.

If course it goes without saying that you'll also have to check your ball joints and particularly your tie-rod ends in the process.

I also want to relate an experience I had with a bad front strut on my '85 Wagon. I would experience a rattling noise coming from the front driver's side whenever I'd hit a bunp. Quite naturally I assumed it was a tie rod end even though I knew the strut itself was bad. After I rebuilt the strut I realized that what was really happening was that that the internal part of the strut was banging around in its shell due to a lack of fluid.
