I would guess that the oil consumption issue in the diesel is due to either rings or valve guides. Old Turbo Diesels, and diesels in general   tend to burn oil I think because of worn rings. It is possible that the culprit is the turbo, but given the age of the engine and the reliability of turbos I would place by bet on the rings. What is the consumption rate?
