Yes, the dist oil seal is common. And if the spark is weak or misfiring it can also cause 6 flashes. It will not cause 4 though.

The rotor resistor has a bad habit of going high resistance also. Sometimes you can see little cracks in the potting which is a dead giveaway. The best tool for diagnosis is an ohmmeter.
