Sounds like you nailed the cause. The question is where is the vacuum leak? A gas engine should have an accumulator somewhere. Its under the battery on the left strut on my diesel. This accumulator will hold enough vacuum to run your air controls and cruise control when the engine stops making vacuum (accelerating). There may be a hole in it, or a cracked vacuum hose.
