Nitrogen doesn't compress/expand due to temperature as much as ambient air. Race cars generally
fill their tires with nitrogen for this very reason...tire pressure cold and tire pressure warm is
basically the same. Also, the oxygen in ambient air more easily passes through the tire structure
at a molecular level.
So this is quite common and recommended to keep a more constant tire pressure over a longer period
of time and through variable temperatures.
Does it by itself increase gas mileage? No...not by itself. But what it does do is decrease the
liklihood that tire pressure will drop in cold temperatures or over time which would increase
rolling resistance and decrease mileage. Nitrogen just fixes that scenario.
You're not nuts. I fill my race tires with nitrogen...it's a great idea for street tires too...
