I've done this simply because at one point I happened to have a surplus tank
of nitrogen but no working air compressor. I fail to see how is could be
different mileage-wise than "standard" air (mostly nitrogen anyway). It
might help reduce oxidation, even though that rarely happens inside the
wheel.
Other more interesting uses for nitrogen were found in the kitchen. Dry
foods, bread, etc, last almost forever if you purge the bag or container
with a blast of nitrogen before sealing.
Apparently this is what the snack food companies do when bagging their stuff
to allow a long shelf life.
