[Peugeot-L] 505 87 and up N9TE- (A?) Crankcase breather hose valve

Was wondering if anyone knows what the valve attached to the breather hose on '87 and up N9TE- A's does? I picked one up thinking it might be an oil trap of some sort but upon closer inspection noticed that it only is a valve and the operation is that it is open both directions and only closes when vacuum is applied from the valve cover side. Does it just keep the engine from sucking air from the intake occasionally. I've got an '86 N9TE which didn't come with one. Is it worth installing?
