Raul,
The difference between diesel starter applications is related not to the
turbocharger, but to a production change early in the '82 model year for
all diesels, including 504 and 604.
The late starters have a smaller gear on the bendix, and the center bolt
hole is enlarged on the mating face of the mounting flange to accommodate
an alignment collar. Various starter brands are used: Bosch, Ducellier,
Paris-Rhone, and rarely Lucas. They all interchange, but not across
the redesign boundary.
The early engines have a 6-bolt flywheel, vs 8 bolts on the late ones, and
the early ones have the oil feed line for the rocker arms wrapping around
the rear of the engine from the oil filter base to the center of the
cylinder head by the exhaust manifold, which is about the only
distinguishing feature of the early engines externally. The late engines
use a short oil line that mounts wholly on the passenger side of the engine.
If you are replacing a starter on the late engine, it is important to
recover the alignment collar if it sticks to the starter, because it can
stick in the bellhousing or in the starter when they are separated. If you
get a used starter with the collar already in it, and you try to install it
on a bellhousing with a collar still in it, the starter won't fit. And if
you have no collar, the starter may be mis-aligned, causing damage to the
Bendix and or flywheel ring gear.
If you contact a local rebuilder about rebuilding yours, be sure to give
them the make and model number from the old starter.
I have a new late starter for $275. I have one used late starter and two
used early ones. I would have to check them over to quote a price.
