An EU-3 Diesel with common rail direct injection (electronic) and
oxidation catalyst will be pretty clean. The particulates will be very
low, perhaps as little as 1% of an old style Diesel (properly adjusted,
not one of those poorly timed soot factories). Of course an EU-4
Diesel with a particulate filter would be even better in that regard.
NOx is dealt with as well through the oxi-cat, and would be a lot lower
than old Diesels.
The main advantage of Diesels is they produce about 20-30% less CO2
than the equivalent gas engine.
A modern Diesel is very clean, so I'd not worry about the overall
differences...
