I very much appreciate those who responded about my MI16 noise problem upon startup. Sounds like some have had the same experience that I have had and that is comforting (I guess). I'm getting a little discouraged about several of the pugs I have-a turbo for one.
For a few years, I have been storing a turbo engine that I thought was in good shape. Last year, I installed it but didn't drive it much. Recently, I started driving it and it appears that it has a cracked head just like the last one (which I fixed once). I don't notice it overheating yet. Upon startup, a cloud of white smoke emits from the tailpipe. Further, I need to add coolant every few weeks (maybe 1-2 cups). So I'm guessing that it has a cracked head and coolant leaks down into the cylinder when it sits. I guess it could be a gasket problem but from all I've heard on the list and my own experience, cracks are more likely? Could it be anything else? I haven't looked for bubbles in the coolant yet.
So, anticipating that it is the head and realizing that this has been covered before on the list for which I apologize, what luck are people having by having the head repaired. Is it possible to repair them? The Euro mechanic I occasionally go to seems to think that it is very difficult to much mileage out of a repaired head. Experience? Has anyone driven a car with these symptoms for a substantial amount of time without further problems or enlarged cracks? Rulon
