Re: [Peugeot-L] 505 Turbo Head

Cracking N9 heads is a pain in the ass.. I think i've personally seen a total of 7-10 heads get replaced.. had some re-done at sunset coachman which were supposedly "re-enforced". I'll admit they didn't crack again, but the valve guides all slid down. The last place i had a head done was a machine shop in LA that i think dubarr uses. They did a damn good job, for a great price, and are familiar with N9 heads. (arco welding, in santa ana)

The 7-10 head figure mentioned above is a little unfair because that's a lot of different cars. If the job is done according to the TSB it shouldnt crack (i've yet to see a head crack which was done with the proper re-torque specified in the TSB).

Recently, I started driving it and it appears that it has a cracked head just like the last one (which I fixed once). I don't notice it overheating yet. Upon startup, a cloud of white smoke emits from the tailpipe. Further, I need to add coolant every few weeks (maybe 1-2 cups). So I'm guessing that it has a cracked head and coolant leaks down into the cylinder when it sits. I guess it could be a gasket problem but from all I've heard on the list and my own experience, cracks are more likely? Could it be anything else? I haven't looked for bubbles in the coolant yet.

Is it possible to repair them? The Euro mechanic I occasionally go to seems to think that it is very difficult to much mileage out of a repaired head. Experience? Has anyone driven a car with these symptoms for a substantial amount of time without further problems or enlarged cracks? Rulon
